Dentures are full arches of prosthetic teeth that have all teeth present. They are ideal for patients who are missing all of their teeth or who will be having the rest of their teeth removed due to bone loss problems or decay. Partials are smaller in size and often only have a few teeth attached to be worn when you’re missing multiple teeth, but still have some or most of your real teeth.
Who is a Good Candidate for Dentures and Partials?
An exam and series of X-rays will be needed to determine if you’re a viable candidate for dentures or a partial. Some of the best candidates for the procedure include:
- Patients who are missing all their teeth
- Patients who are missing many teeth
- Patients who are suffering from bone loss or severe decay will have their teeth removed
What to Expect when Being Fitted for Dentures
If you need to have teeth removed before being fitted for dentures or partials, this will be done prior to having the prosthetics made. Impressions are then made of your mouth and sent to a local dental lab where the dentures or partials are made specifically for you. The prosthetic will then be placed in your mouth and smoothed out to provide a comfortable, and secure fit.
