What are Fixed Bridges?
Fixed bridges come in various materials, but the most common is a porcelain-fused-to-metal bridge that offers the beauty of porcelain with the durability of metal. The bridge is placed on two abutment teeth, and a pontic, or fake tooth, is in the middle to fill in the gap where a tooth is missing. The bridge is matched perfectly with your teeth so that it blends in seamlessly. A dental bridge is extremely durable and long-lasting with proper care and hygiene.
Who is a good candidate for a Fixed Bridge?
A dental exam and x-rays are needed to determine if you are a viable candidate for a dental bridge. Some of the reasons a person might be a good candidate for the procedure include:
- You are missing one or more teeth next to each other
- You don’t want to have an implant placed
- You aren’t missing enough teeth to warrant a partial denture
What to expect with the procedure
The dental bridge procedure is done quickly and easily right in the office. First, the two surrounding teeth are filed down to make room for the crowns holding the bridge. Next, impressions or 3-D renderings are made, which will create the crowns and bridge. Once the permanent bridge is created for you, it will be cemented in place, where the crowns will fit over the teeth that have been filed down, and the bridge will fill the space in between them for long-lasting durability.
